Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) is a ready-to-use microbiological culture medium supplied in convenient 90mm Petri dishes for the cultivation and enumeration of yeasts and moulds.
Commonly used in clinical, food, dairy, research and quality control laboratories, this medium supports robust fungal growth and facilitates the recovery of a wide range of fungal organisms.
Potato Dextrose Agar is formulated for the cultivation, isolation and enumeration of yeasts and moulds from a variety of specimen types.
The medium is suitable for microbiological testing in clinical laboratories, food production facilities, dairy testing environments and research institutions where reliable fungal culture performance is required.
Containing dehydrated potato infusion and dextrose, the medium promotes luxuriant fungal growth, supports mould sporulation and assists pigment production in certain dermatophyte species. The formulation enables clear observation of colonial morphology, assisting with enumeration and subsequent microorganism identification.
Supplied as prepared agar plates in 90mm Petri dishes, this ready-to-use medium eliminates preparation time and reduces handling requirements. Plates are provided in packs of ten and are suitable for direct inoculation following equilibration to room temperature.
Specimens can be inoculated directly onto the agar surface and incubated at 25-30°C in accordance with laboratory protocols and applicable standards. Most cultures are examined after 48–72 hours; however, certain fungal organisms, including dermatophytes, may require incubation periods exceeding seven days.
Store the product in its original packaging at 2–8°C until the stated expiry date. Before use, inspect packaging and plates for integrity. Do not use expired, contaminated or damaged media.
Good microbiological laboratory practice, aseptic technique and appropriate handling procedures should be followed at all times.
